The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates is often regarded as one of the wisest and most influential figures in Western philosophy. Born in Athens in 470 BCE, Socrates did not leave behind any writings of his own. Despite his efforts, Socrates was found guilty and sentenced to death by drinking a cup of poison hemlock.
